Weybridge gets its name from the bridge on the highway to Chertsey and dates back to 1235. Weybridge played it’s role as a stop-off point for most travellers on the way to Oatland Palace and London.
Oatland Palace being the Royal retreat of Henry VIII and was contructed in 1537. Sadley the beautiful Oatlands Palace was detroyed in 1650 and most of the bricks and rubble was used to contstruct the lock walls of most parts of the Wey Navigation system, one of the first canal systems in the UK.
